The Great One began his Hall of Fame NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers in 1979, and immediately put the league on notice. He won his first of an astounding eight straight Hart Memorial Trophies for being the league's MVP. He also led the Oilers to four Stanley Cup titles in a five-year span in the 1980s. This original photo by Robert Shaver was taken during that decade of absolute greatness for Gretzky with Edmonton. Though Gretzky appears to be very early on in his career here, he would already have been in the midst of his MVP run and likely beginning his Stanley Cup journey as well. The shot of Gretzky in action measures 8" by 10," and the intensity seen in his eyes shows how focused he always was on the prize.
