Chicago Photographer George C. Burke photographed virtually every player to appear in the majors from the 1930s through the 1960s. His photographs are noted for their atmospheric quality, and none show that better than this portrait of Lou Gehrig. The Iron Horse is captured sitting in the dugout, bat on shoulder, gazing off towards the field, lost in his own thoughts. To add to an already intriguing photo, Gehrig has signed and inscribed, “To Dick, May I always be worthy of your friendship, Sincerely Lou Gehrig” in extraordinarily bold black fountain pen. The edges show some light wear and rounding while the inscription and signature is mint. The reverse of the photograph has been printed with Burke’s RDM Studio logo and address and stamped with an additional “Geo. C. Burke” and address. An absolutely beautiful signed Gehrig photo taken by one of the game’s great photographers. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Mint 9 by PSA.
