Summer Premier Auction 2014

Intriguing, one of a kind, 1896 Cleveland Spiders composite 7" by 8 1/2" team cabinet photo with caricatures relating to player's nicknames, emanating from the legendary Cy Young's personal collection and signed by him. Blank back cabinet photo has been signed at the bottom "Cy Young" in beautiful 8-9/10 looking vintage blue ink. This cabinet is one of the group of 7 cabinet photos sent by Young to a friend, probably in the 1930's. 18 players and the Temple Cup are pictured in real photos that have been doctored to make them resemble their nicknames - Chief Zimmer(Indian), Capt. Tebeau(Admiral), etc., although with many it is hard to figure out what the nickname is - Cy Young(Scotsman?), Ed Delehanty(Hobo?). The Temple Cup is represented as a glass of beer. Cleveland had won the temple Cup over the 1st place Orioles in 1895 so they were considered the reigning Champions until the 1896 Temple Cup. All the images are sharp and creative. The cabinet photo itself is very clean both front and back, but there is a heavy crease extending diagonally from about 2" in at the upper right edge toward the right side. This extends pretty much all the way down the cabinet until it meets up with another crease at the lower right corner. At the top of the crease there is about a 2" or so tear. Sad thing about this is it probably happened during the original mailing with the small cabinet photos. A real once in a lifetime opportunity to obtain a unique 1896 Cleveland Spiders Cy Young signed caricature photo once owned by the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher!
