Bob Cousy’s incredible ball handling ability and mastery of the transition game revolutionized the NBA. His Celtic teammate Tommy Heinsohn told the Boston Herald in 1983, “Cooz was the absolute offensive master”. “What Russell was on defense, that’s what Cousy was on offense -- a magician. Once that ball reached his hands, the rest of us just took off, never bothering to look back. We didn't have to. He’d find us. When you got into a position to score, the ball would be there.” Cousy led the league in assists for eight consecutive seasons from 1953-1960. On January 24th, 1960, in a road game against Syracuse, “The Houdini of The Hardwood” logged his 5000th career assist, becoming the first player in NBA history to do so. The Celtics organization was quick to honor their beloved point guard’s landmark achievement. During their first home game following Cousy’s unprecedented 5000th career assist, he was presented with this spectacular 37” tall trophy. Wonderfully ornate, and finely crafted, the trophy bears an engraved plaque on the base that reads, “5000th Assist by Bob Cousy at Syracuse N.Y. Jan. 24th, 1960 – Boston Celtics 131, Nationals 110 – This trophy presented by Walter A. Brown (Celtics Owner) and Lou Pieri (Treasurer) at Boston Garden, Jan. 27th, 1960”. Cousy has signed the back of this magnificent trophy in black sharpie. Beautifully preserved, it is the ultimate symbol of Cousy’s groundbreaking style of play and a significant piece of basketball history.

LOA from Bob Cousy.
