Featured here is a pair of items previously displayed at the San Diego Hall of Champions that commemorates one of baseball's greatest moments: Don Larsen's World Series perfect game on October 8, 1956. It remains the only perfect game in postseason history, and the clutch performance in a pivotal Game 5 at Old Yankee Stadium broke a 2-2 series tie with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Yanks won the Fall Classic in seven games and Larsen was named MVP.
To honor Larsen for this incredible feat and his great career in pinstripes, the Yankees held a special 50th anniversary celebration of the perfect game and presented him with an award. It was June 24, 2006—Old Timers Day at old Yankee Stadium—and Larsen wore this offered team-issued home jersey with his old No. 18. It’s the same home pinstriped version players wear, with proper Majestic tagging on the left tail. The size 48 shirt displays obvious wear and can be photo-matched to that day’s festivities (Getty 71308816 & 71375795). Larsen has blessed the jersey with his signature in 7/10 black marker and this long inscription: “This is the uniform I wore on June 24, 2006 for ‘Oldtimers’ day when the New York Yankees honored me for the 50th Anniversary of my 1956 World Series Perfect Game.” At the bottom after his autograph he added “WS PG 10-8-1956.”
The accompanying crystal award trophy includes a lovely display stand holding a softball-sized baseball. The crystal stand is etched beautifully with “50th Anniversary – Don Larsen – WSPG – October 8, 1956.” The sweet spot of the crystal ball is engraved “Don Larsen – WSPG 10-8-56” with the “DLPC 48/50” for the limited edition number. An elegant piece to go along with Larsen’s special event-worn jersey.
