Addendum: New details added about this ball. According to baseball reference, hit #3,082 by Gwynn to pass Anson was a home run!

Featured here is Tony Gwynn's 3,082nd career hit baseball to pass Cap Anson -- founding father of the 3,000 hit club -- on the all-time list. Some reported hit totals for Anson vary, but the MLB officially recognizes 3,081 as his official tally. Gwynn passed Anson on May 23, 2000, in San Diego's 5-3 home loss in 10 innings to the New York Mets, going 2-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBI. According to the game log, Gwynn's first hit (#3,081 to tie Anson) was an RBI double in the 4th inning off Mets starter Al Leiter. Then in the sixth, Mr. Padre homered off Leiter for his first dinger of the 2000 season (#134 for his career, which turned out to be his second-to-last).

The Rawlings Official Major League Baseball (Selig) is rubbed up like a typical game used ball and shows additional bat contact evidence and soiling. "5/23/2000 HIT #3082 PASS ANSON" is notated neatly in black ballpoint on the west panel. The ball originated from the Tony Gwynn estate, according to the previous auction listing, and follows suit with other milestone game balls that have come from the late, great Hall of Famer's personal collection. The fact that this is also a home run ball is a nice bonus! A letter from the previous auction house who sold this ball is included.
