Featured here is an Olympic torch used in the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. Measuring 32 inches, the 1996 torch is the longest ever made for a Summer Olympics. The Centennial torch consists of 22 reeds--one for each of the Olympic Games--with a center handle of Georgia hardwood. The names of each host city are etched in a gold band near the torch base; another band above the wood shows the Atlanta Games logo and Quilt of Leaves. Its diameter varies from 2-1/4 inches at the bottom to 3-1/2 inches at the top. The reeds are aluminum; the hardwood is either pecan or hickory, with two gold-plated brass bands. It remains in outstanding condition with a lightly darkened area around the flame opening from being lit during a leg of the flame relay that culminated in Muhammad Ali's magical moment lighting the Olympic cauldron.
