Super Bowl XXII was a much needed distraction from the strike-shortened NFL regular season. The game was played at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego on January 31, 1988, and pitted the returning Denver Broncos against the Washington Redskins. After Elway and the Broncos dominated the first quarter by going ahead 10-0, the Redskins roared back for five 2nd quarter touchdowns on their way to 42 unanswered points in the 42-10 blowout victory. Game MVP Doug Williams threw for a then-record 340 yards to become the first African-American starting quarterback to win the Super Bowl.

This Wilson Official National Football League ball was used during Super Bowl XXII and was inscribed and presented to the San Diego Hall of Champions. The ball shows appropriate game usage and one panel has been painted white and painstakingly hand-inscribed with the results of the game and the helmets of each participating team. It appears that Washington Redskins' Head Coach Joe Gibbs gifted this football to former San Diego Hall of Champions Founder Bob Breitbard as there is a faint inscription in black marker on the bottom left of the painted panel that reads: "Bob, Thanks. Joe Gibbs." The back leather panel has an additional signature and inscription that appears to be from Gibbs to Breitbard as well. Fabulous one-of-a-kind, hand-inscribed game ball from Super Bowl XXII.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Pre-certified by PSA.DNA.
