George Steinbrenner's managerial merry-go-round during the late 1970's/early 1980's often featured a number of familiar faces, none more so, however, than Billy Martin. The brash and fiery skipper piloted the Yankees on five separate occasions between the years 1975 and 1988. Offered is Martin’s New York Yankees road jersey worn by him during his final season in the Bronx in 1988. The grey knit jersey is lettered "New York" across the front and features the number "1" on the reverse. All letters and numbers are in navy blue tackle twill with white trim. Identification of the name, year and uniform number ("Martin 88 1") is chain-stitched in black upon a grey strip tag in the collar. A "Wilson" label with adjacent size “42” and “Tapered” flag tags appear on the left front tail. The jersey is original and unaltered, displaying light to moderate game wear. Although Martin was relieved as manager after the 1988 season, he was still a special consultant to Steinbrenner when he was killed in a low speed single-vehicle accident on Christmas Day 1989.
