This evocative photo captures the rookie John Elway watching closely as veteran Broncos QB Steve DeBerg is interviewed after their team’s 14-10 win over Pittsburgh. The September 4, 1983 game was Elway’s first appearance in the NFL. The 23 year-old started the game and completed one pass before he was replaced by DeBerg in the second half.
Elway would go on to become the face of the Denver Broncos and retire in 1999 holding the record for most victories by a starting quarterback. The front of this historic photo shows overall toning from age and some staining throughout. The edges show light wear, and the corners exhibit slight rounding and creasing. The reverse of the photo has a handwritten “WFOF” in black ink and there is overall toning and light staining throughout.
