This 1980 Winter Olympics participation medal was presented to athletes competing at these Lake Placid Games, including the fabled "Miracle On Ice" U.S. hockey team. Weighing in at almost 7.5 ounces and measuring 3 inches in diameter and 6 mm thick, it is one of the largest, most robust medals distributed to Olympic participants. A stylized rendering of winter athletes in action appears on the
obverse. The raised
relief design elements are immaculately struck. On the reverse is the 1980 Winter Games emblem at center surrounded by an important spiraling message: "IN THE NAME OF ALL COMPETITORS I PROMISE THAT WE SHALL TAKE PART IN THESE OLYMPIC GAMES RESPECTING AND ABIDING BY THE RULES WHICH GOVERN THEM IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF SPORTSMANSHIP FOR THE GLORY OF SPORT AND THE HONOR OF OUR TEAMS." The rim is stamped "IOC 1978 MACO." The medal comes in Mint condition with its original hinged blue presentation case (EX).
