In 1971, longtime MLB veteran slugger Richie "Dick" Allen played his only season at Chavez Ravine as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. A former Phillie (seven seasons) and Cardinal (one season), Allen would have another eye-popping year at the plate for the Blue Crew after batting .295 with 90 runs batted in, 24 doubles and a time-high 23 home runs. He helped the Dodgers secure a second-place (89-73) finish in the National League West standings, just one game behind the Division Champion San Francisco Giants. This lot features Allen's 1971 autographed and game-worn Los Angeles Dodgers road jersey.
The miraculously preserved gray flannel boasts proper "Rawlings" tagging (size 44) in the rear inside collar as well as blue chain-stitching on the left front tail reading "Allen 71" to indicate the player and the season in question. Further, a washing instructions tag exists on the inside of the left front tail and includes a sewn-on flag tag reading "SET 1 #8P 1971." The jersey features "Dodgers" embroidered across the chest in blue-on-white script lettering and Allen's uniform number "15" in red felt numerals stretching 4.5” tall on the left front breast. The Dodgers trademark blue-on-white piping runs around the collar, across both shoulders and around each sleeve. On the jersey's reverse, Allen's number "15" can be found in double felt (blue on white) number stretching seven inches tall. Either arm pit area sports four manufactured air holes. The jersey shows moderate use with all seven original buttons intact. Allen has signed the jersey on the right front tail in blue fine-point marker and added the inscription: "'64 Rookie of the Year '72 M.V.P. 351 HRS." A remarkable relic shining a spotlight on Allen's only season playing in the City of Angels.
