Images of Lew Alcindor dunking in college as a UCLA Bruin are notable for a couple reasons. First, this PSA/DNA encapsulated Type I photo captures the incredible agility and athleticism of the basketball giant. Second, "Big Lew" only got to dunk during his sophomore 1966-67 varsity campaign, as the NCAA outlawed dunking the following season, largely due to Alcindor's dominance!
So this splendid 7x9 image, dated March 1967 against USC, is a rare glimpse of Lew's college dunking prowess. We do wonder if Coach Wooden cringed at the showmanship displayed in this iconic photo, but Coach and Lew cleverly used the upcoming NCAA dunking ban to their advantage, as Lew developed an arsenal of other shots like the "sky hook."
