Money trouble forced the San Francisco Warriors to trade Wilt Chamberlain, the face of their franchise, to the rival Philadelphia 76ers. After the trade, Warriors owner Franklin Mieuli told reporters, “Chamberlain is not an easy man to love... the fans in San Francisco never learned to love him. Wilt is easy to hate... people came to see him lose.” Perhaps it was that comment that was running through Chamberlain’s head in his first game with Philly – against the Warriors. This photo was taken by photographer Darryl Norenberg during Wilt’s 76ers debut and captures the Hall of Famer as he attempts to score against former teammate Nate Thurmond. The photo shows great contrast in the printing and light toning from age. The reverse has the United Press International stamping and the original 1/21/65 dated caption slug affixed. A great original photo taken on Wilt Chamberlain’s 76ers debut. The photograph measures 7” x 9” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
