Brooks Robinson is generally considered the greatest defensive third baseman in the history of Major League Baseball. He was selected to 18 straight American League All-Star appearances from 1960-1974, won the 1964 American League Most Valuable Player award, and was the second recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award as “best exemplifying the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team.” Robinson played his entire 23-year career with the Baltimore Orioles, helping them to four American League pennants and two World Series championships (1966, 1970). He was voted the 1970 World Series MVP after batting .583 during the ALCS against the Minnesota Twins and continued his hot hitting during the Fall Classic by batting .429 against the Cincinnati Reds.
This lot features Robinson’s 1963 autographed and game-worn Baltimore Orioles road jersey, gloriously preserved in all-original condition. The jersey, which shows ideal game use, came from a season in which Robinson recorded 148 hits, collected his fourth straight Gold Glove award, and knocked in 67 runs. Each of its elements are simply superb, from the perfectly positioned “O-R-I-O-L-E-S” team name across the front in black tackle twill letters outlined in orange to his uniform number “5” in like fashion on the reverse. The jersey shows the Wilson Sporting Goods tag (size 42) on the front-left tail, just above a white sewn-on tag with black chain-stitching that reads: “5-42-63-1” indicating his uniform number, size, season and set number. The first-ballot Baseball Hall of Famer has added his signature in black Sharpie to the front of the shirt just above the Wilson manufacturer’s tag. All seven original buttons on the front of the jersey remain intact. The outstanding jersey has been graded A10 by MEARS.
