1961 was a banner year for Roger Maris, with the storyline of the season being his home run chase with teammate Mickey Mantle. Maris broke Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record on October 1, 1961, the final game of the season. That was the date he hit his 61st bomb to set a new single-season mark. In this photo, Maris poses with Sal Durante, the kid who caught Maris’ blast that day. He ended up selling the ball for $5,000 and used the funds to get married after first offering the ball to Maris.
