First baseman Roy Sievers has the distinction of being the only player to appear for both the original Washington Senators and the expansion version that returned baseball to the nation’s capital in 1961. After debuting with the St. Louis Browns, with whom he won AL Rookie of the Year honors in 1949, Sievers was traded to the Washington Senators – another perennial last place team playing on borrowed time as the Griffith family looked for a new city to relocate the franchise. This road uniform set dates to Sievers’ 1955 season with the original club. That season Sievers launched 25 home runs, drove in 106 runs and batted .271 as the Senators finished dead last in the AL. Two years later the right-handed slugger would blast 42 bombs and drive in 114 runs to lead the league in both categories, while batting over .300 on his way to finishing third in AL MVP voting.

The gray flannel jersey has “WASHINGTON” arched across the front in red and navy felt. The front is closed with a zipper and a Spalding label is stitched inside the collar. A size “44” and “SET 1 1955” hang tags are affixed to the label and a white strip tag with “Sievers” in red chain stitching is sewn below. The back of the jersey has Sievers’ number “2” in red and navy felt. The jersey shows a lot of wear yet remains in fine condition with some staining and toning throughout. There is one noticeable stain located near his NOB along with the expected perspiration staining around the neck and arm openings. The jersey is accompanied by matching gray flannel pants. The outside thighs are trimmed in navy and there is a team repaired rip in the knee area. A fantastic early game worn uniform set from the star of the Senators last years in DC. Sourced from a reliable Senators collector. Getty 81345946 provides a great style-match (possible photo-match) from the '55 season.
