Willie Mays had a great rookie campaign in 1951, helping to lead the Giants to a Hollywood-style late season pennant run to overcome the rival Dodgers. Much was expected from the Giants young star, but when most kids found this card in their packs in 1952, Mays was serving in the U.S. Army and would not return to baseball until 1954. Though not his true “rookie card,” 1952 marks Mays’ debut on a Topps card. Mays’ inaugural Topps card is among his most popular, and this is an exceptional example. The color and registration are clean and the centering on the card is about 60/40 side to side and bottom to top. One of the cornerstones of any advanced card collection.
