This amazing jersey was worn by Augie Galan, a three-time National League All-Star during the Depression and World War II. A left fielder, his career lasted from 1934-49, including stints with the Cubs (1934–41), Dodgers (1941–46), Reds (1947–48), New York Giants (1949) and Philadelphia Athletics (1949). In 16 seasons, Galan posted a .287 batting average with 100 home runs and 830 RBI in 1,742 games played.
This jersey is from that 1949 campaign in New York towards the end of his career. In the collar of the jersey is the "MacGregor" label, which includes the Size 42. Below this is a white felt patch with "Galan 29" embroidered in orange chain stitch. On the inside right tail is the flag tag reading "Set 1 1949." "Giants" appears across the front of the jersey in block letters and Galan's No. 29 on the back; both the team name and number are black on orange felt. On the left sleeve is a minor-league or local patch that was added to the jersey. The shirt exhibits game use and with the exception of the sleeve patch appears to have no other alterations of any description.
Comes with a Letter from Grey Flannel and a Letter of Provenance from The Newport Sports Museum Collection.
