Among all the storied single-season teams in baseball history, from the 1927 Yankees to the 1969 Mets, the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers stand out from the rest. Besides being the team that brought winning baseball back to Brooklyn, the ’47 Dodgers were unique in that it was the first integrated baseball team in the 20th century. Besides the barrier-breaking Robinson and Bankhead, the 1947 team combined the best of the pre-war Dodgers stars such as Pee Wee Reese and Pete Reiser and introduced Carl Furillo and Gil Hodges, who would make the Dodgers a 1950s powerhouse. This classic posed team photo depicts this barrier breaking team at the very start of a season that would end with both a pennant and the integration of the National Pastime. All the 1947 Boys of Summer are included: from a pensive Jackie Robinson and the cocky-looking Eddie Stanky to the street clothes-wearing manager Burt Shotton and a youthful Gil Hodges. With fabled Ebbets Field as its backdrop, this photo artfully captures one of sports’ legendary teams. The front of the 8” x 10” photo shows toning and edge wear and some very small creases on the bottom left and right white border. The reverse bears several handwritten notations and credit stamps surmounted by a Brown Brothers Stock Photo label. The image has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 Authentic by PSA.
