In 1939, the USA Trojans football team, coached by Howard Jones, finished the regular season with an 8-0-2 overall record (5-0-2 in the Pacific Coast Conference). They defeated the Tennessee Volunteers in the 1940 Rose Bowl, scoring the only points achieved on the Volunteers all season, ending their 23-game winning streak, and winning the national championship in the process.
This lot features a since-deflated Official Inter-Collegiate Spalding football signed by 32 members of that season’s team. The signatures,
all in black ink, have held up remarkably well over the years and include Bobby Jones, Harry Smith, Bob Robertson, Bill Fisk, Bob Winslow, Jim Slatter and Bob Hoffman, the latter who was a running back and went on to play in the NFL for the Washington Redskins.
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
