While we are not sure who Miss Mildred was, what we do know is that she was the recipient of this very fine, perfectly autographed postcard from Lou Gehrig. The Benjamin Franklin Hotel postcard is postmarked April 25, 1938 from Philadelphia. On that date the Yankees were in town beginning a 3-game series against Connie Mack’s Athletics at Shibe Park. Since the card was postmarked at 10 a.m., it can be opined that Gehrig signed the postcard and dropped it in the mail on his way to the ballpark. Facing Philadelphia right hander Buck Ross that afternoon, Gehrig went 0-for-1 with three walks in the 6-1 loss to the A’s. The postcard has some toning and slight edge wear from mailing, and there is residue from adhesive tape in two corners; however, none of this affects Gehrig’s stunning blue fountain pen signature. The postcard has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA and graded a perfect Gem Mint 10. Also comes with LOA from JSA.
