In 1937 the Trojans broke even with a 4-4-2 record. Quarterback Amby Schindler led the team in scoring, rushing and total offense which earned him all-conference honors. Two years later Schindler would lead USC to the National Championship and was named both the Rose Bowl and College All-Star Game MVP. Another standout from the ’37 squad was Grenny Lansdell, a rarity in the game who could not only quarterback but was a talented running back, safety and place kicker. Jones, Schindler and Lansdell have signed the helmet in black fountain pen also with 42 other members of the team.

This Spalding leather helmet seems to personify “smash-mouth football” as the red paint on its surface has flaked and chipped due to collisions. The leather still displays every one of the tough blows it took on the gridiron over 80 years ago. The suspension liner and sweatband, though both worn, are still intact. A “B” has been handwritten on one of the suspension straps. Pre-war college football pieces are rare to begin with, to find a game used helmet signed by the team is quite extraordinary.

Includes letter of provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions. Autographs pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
