No breakfast food is more identified with sports than Wheaties. Their orange boxes with the likeness of the very best athletes in the world have been a fixture at the breakfast table for generations. Among the most sought after of the Wheaties collectibles are the 1935 Series 1 which consisted of 27 athletes. Of the set, by far the most desirable is of Lou Gehrig. Gehrig, who is depicted taking a deep cut at the plate, was in the prime of his career, finally emerging from Babe Ruth’s shadow and becoming the Yankees biggest star.
Measuring approximately 6" x 6 1/4" the card is in wonderful condition, with the colors strong and bright. Because the Wheaties cards were hand cut, the condition and trim are less than satisfactory – not with this beauty. Series 1 cards are extremely difficult to get an authentic or number grade, and per the PSA consensus report, only 84 cards in all four years of the set have achieved that, with 57 of them achieving Authentic status. There was only one other card that did achieve an equal grade and that is the 1936 series 3 Lou Gehrig (fielding position). Next highest in line is one other 1936 card achieving a grade 4 and the rest are all lower with no other player or card for any of the other series have achieved that high a grade. The card has been encapsulated by PSA and graded an EX 5.
