In the long history of the Chicago Cubs, no pitcher has won more games than Charley Root. From 1926 to 1941, Root won 201 games for the Northsiders, pitched them to pennants in 1929, 1932, 1935 and 1938. Along with holding the franchise record for wins, Root’s name still is atop the most games and most innings pitched. Interestingly, the back of his 1933 Goudey card does not mention the moment he is most remembered for which occurred just months before – giving up the famed “Called Shot” to Babe Ruth in the 1932 World Series. This near-perfect example of card 226 has 60/40 top to bottom and side to side centering, pack-fresh color, and snow white borders. Graded a PSA NM-MT 8, it stands as one of the finest in the hobby.
