Dizzy Dean’s 1933 Goudey was released just as he was establishing himself as a household name and heir to Babe Ruth’s title as the most famous ballplayer in the land. Diz set a record in 1933 when he struck out 17 Cubs and capped off the year by winning 20 games. The best was yet to come – the next summer he and his brother Paul would pitch the Gas House Gang Cardinals to a World Championship and win the NL MVP Award. Dean led the league in strikeouts four consecutive years and wins twice as he carved out a career that ended with his plaque in Cooperstown. Dean’s 1933 Goudey card is one of the more striking ones in the set, with a pastural landscape behind his classic pitching pose. This example rates a PSA EX-MT 6 though its eye-appeal displays much better than that grade.
