It took a special team to derail Connie Mack’s 1929-31 Philadelphia Athletics pennant-winning juggernaut, and that team was the 1932 New York Yankees. This unique ballclub was equally divided between the 1920s Murderer’s Row Yankees of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Herb Pennock and Earle Combs and a crop of talented newcomers such as Lefty Gomez, Bill Dickey and Red Ruffing. Under new manager Joe McCarthy, the ’32 Yankees eclipsed the A’s by 13 games and went on to sweep the Cubs in the World Series. This series will always be remembered for Babe Ruth’s “Called Shot” in Game 3, one of the greatest moments in all of sports history. Interestingly, former Yankee Mark Koenig was the catalyst of the Babe’s finest moment. Koenig had been sold to the Cubs mid-season and turned out to be a major contributor to the Cubs having won the National League pennant. However, the Cubs players voted him only a partial share of the World Series money, causing much resentment among the Yankees. Regarding the Cubs as “cheapskates,” the New Yorkers vocalized their opinions about the unfair treatment of their former teammate throughout the series. The caustic bench jockeying reached a crescendo in the 5th inning of Game 3, inspiring the Babe to seemingly call his home run to show up the loudmouths in the Cubs dugout. The rest is history. Sometime during that season, Hall of Fame pitcher Herb Pennock had his teammates sign this beautiful red and blue stitch Spalding “Babe Ruth Home Run Special” ball, collecting the signatures of Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Herb Pennock, Earle Combs, Bill Dickey, Red Ruffing, Joe Sewell, Lefty Gomez and Tony Lazzeri plus Ben Chapman, Frank Crosetti, Danny MacFayden, Jumbo Brown, Lyn Lary, Cy Moore, Doc Farrell, Ed Wells, Sammy Byrd, Johnny Allen, Myril Hoag, George Pipgras, Art Jorgens, Charlie Devens, and coach Cy Perkins. The ball comes from the family of Herb Pennock and is provided with an LOA from PSA/DNA for the signature authenticity.
