Uruguay captain and center-back Jose Nasazzi was presented this Uruguay Centennial medal by Artigas Football Club and Colegio Pio after leading the host nation to the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup title. Nasazzi was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament by FIFA and is widely regarded as Uruguay's greatest football player of all time. Prior to the 1930 World Cup, El Gran Mariscal ["The Great Marshall"] had already led his country to back-to-back gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics along with three South American Championships (predecessor of Copa America) in 1923, 1924 and 1926 (he would later add a fourth in 1935).

At the 1930 FIFA World Cup tournament, Uruguay's only serious threat was longtime rival Argentina. After defeating Peru and Romania in the first round, Uruguay defeated Yugoslavia 6–1 in the semis to set up a classic final against Argentina. With his team trailing 2–1 at the break, Nasazzi led a second half rally as Uruguay tallied three straight goals to secure a 4–2 victory and the coveted Jules Rimet Trophy for La Celeste [The Sky Blue].

Founded in 1927, Club Atlético Artigas began in Montevideo’s La Teja neighborhood. The club was named after José Gervasio Artigas, a national hero from the 18th and 19th centuries. El Colegio Pío, located in Montevideo's Villa Colón neighborhood, is one of the oldest educational institutions in all of Uruguay having started in 1877. This offered silver medal depicts soccer/football players in raised relief on one side, with "Artigas F.C. - Colegio Pio - Jose Nasazzi - Villa Colon - 1830-1930” etched on the other. This small silver medal (28 mm, 12 g) awarded to a Uruguyan football legend is heavily worn and aged, yet still presents quite well with all design and text elements in tact and legible. Struck by Montevideo minter "Tammaro" (Italian designer Luis Tammaro, who moved to Uruguay in 1887), hallmarked along the rim.
