In 1929, the Philadelphia A's, led by manager Connie Mack, toppled the Yankee dynasty, going on to represent the American League in the World Series. Upon defeating the Cubs in five games the powerhouse “White Elephants” won their first World Championship since 1913. The team was built around hitting and pitching. Al Simmons hit .365 with 34 home runs and a league leading 157 RBI, while Jimmie Foxx hit .354 with 33 home runs and 117 RBI. Pitcher George Earnshaw went 24 - 8, Lefty Grove had a minuscule 2.81 ERA and Eddie Rommel went 12 - 2, all combining for a league low 3.44 ERA. This panoramic photograph of the team, signed by 28 players, is from the collection of third baseman Sammy Hale. Every last man pictured, all the way down to the young mascot kneeling at center has signed vertically on their respective image in fountain pen. The cast of characters includes: Mack, Foxx, Cochrane, Collins, Grove, Simmons, Bishop, Dykes, Earnshaw, Miller, Boley and Haas. The signature quality ranges from 4/10 to 10/10, with each entirely legible and all but a few falling quite comfortably into the 6/10 to 8/10 range. The photograph itself, measuring 9" by 31 1/2" in its original frame, remains very well preserved with a light touch of toning at far left and a single inch-long tear at far right leaving the wide expanse in between problem free. LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA.
