In 1924, after the Hilldale Giants club from Darby, Pennsylvania captured the crown in the newly established Eastern Colored League and the western powerhouse Kansas City Monarchs won out in the four-year old Negro National League. The two teams met in what was scheduled to be a best of nine series for the World’s Championship. However, a 13 inning tie in the pivotal game 4, with alternating wins throughout, forced a tenth and deciding game. The Monarchs won the final game making it the longest and many say the most dramatic World Series---black or white---recorded in the modern era. This extremely scarce 8" by 36” panoramic photograph of the two outstanding ball clubs was taken just before the opening game in Kansas City on October 11, 1924. The players are identified on the piece itself and include, on the Monarchs, Hall of Famers Joe Rogan (fifth uniformed player from the left), Jose Mendez (seventh uniformed player from the left), Monarchs team owner J.L. Wilkinson (first man in suit next to team), “Rube” Foster (the Commissioner), Alex Pompez (owner of several Cuban teams), the Hilldales catching sensation Biz Mackey (ninth uniformed player from the right) and other great stars such as Newt Allen, Nip Winters, Frank Duncan. On the lower right hand corner it states “Photo By J.E. Miller, K.C.” The overall image quality is quite strong, however, the photo has suffered some damage that includes heavy vertical creasing including a few areas of separation.
