This rare 1923 Christy Mathewson signed bank check comes creatively matted within a catchy framed display. Dated Feb. 1, 1923, just two and a half years before his death, the Adirondack National Bank check from a Saranac Lake, NY branch is encapsulated by PSA/DNA with a NM-MT 8 autograph grade. The significance of this branch location cannot be overstated, as Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York is where the legendary Giants pitcher moved in 1923 shortly after contracting tuberculosis due to chemical weapons exposure in World War II. He would succumb to the respiratory disease in October of 1925.

The slabbed check is shadowboxed below two contemporary nostalgia cards (both ungraded): 2001 Upper Deck Hall of Famers Class of '36 and 2003 Donruss Timeless Treasures (LE /200). The latter showcases an authentic Shibe Park (Philadelphia) stadium seat swatch from the 1913 World Series when Connie Mack's Athletics defeated Mathewson's NY Giants. Also adding to the aesthetics is a reprint of Christy's 1911 T205 Gold Border tobacco card (see Lot 1 for the second highest graded authentic example) embedded in between. The gold borders and black background within the display matte make each item pop beautifully. The 1" thick wooden frame measures 17.5" wide by 13" tall. Truly one-of-a-kind and ready to hang on a serious collector's home or office wall.
