Dave Bancroft made his professional baseball debut in 1909 in the Minnesota-Wisconsin League, proving that he could compete with other top players. In 1912, he was drafted into the Pacific Coast League, where he played for three years in Portland. Finally, he was sold to the Phillies before the 1915 campaign. Over the next four years in Philadelphia, he established himself as one of the better shortstops in the league, before being traded to the New York Giants over a contract dispute during the 1920 season. This 1920-23 Dave Bancroft New York Giant Locker Tag shows moderate wear but still appears in great condition for being almost 100 years old. The tag is engraved with “New York B.B.C. Giants Park” with no engraving on the rear side. It measures 1.5” in diameter. The Hall of Fame shortstop’s locker tag originated from his personal collection. It can be assumed that this was one of the first locker tags that Bancroft received after being traded by Philadelphia. This lot is accompanied by an LOA from the Bancroft Family.
