One of the Texas Tommy "Elite Eight" from our recent "Yahtzee Box Find," this PSA GD 2 Larry Doyle card from the short-lived 1914 E224 series is just the second ever graded by PSA. The other got a PSA PR 1. There is only one in the SGC Pop Report (rated VG 3), making this one of three Doyles known to exist. It shows the level of wear and aging expected of a 100+ year-old card. Being distributed loosely in candy packages certainly did not help matters. Centering is a bit off and two corners are creased/damaged (bottom left and top right along right edge). Player image, name and team on front display better than most examples. Back is pretty clean and bio print displays nicely.

Lawrence Joseph Doyle was one of the National League's top second baseman during his 14-year career (1907-20) spent almost entirely with the New York Giants. He won the 1912 Chalmers Award (baseball's early version of league MVP) and the NL Battiing Crown in 1915 with a .320 average. The man known as "Laughing Larry" served as legendary manager John McGraw's team captain for three pennant-winning seasons (1911-13). In an era when middle infielders were valued more for their defense, Doyle (along with Lajoie and Collins in the AL) inspired an offensive standard for what a complete second baseman was supposed to bring to his team.
