Presented here is a 1913 Honus Wagner studio photograph from the Wagner estate with a striking portrait of the Pittsburgh Pirates legendary shortstop. The ancient 11" by 14" photo comes in a vintage 12" by 16" frame, just as it was originally displayed in the Wagner household a century ago. Floating against a creamy white background, the Flying Dutchman and his distinct facial features appear in his Pirates flannel jersey and cap with a stoic gaze giving the picture a Mona Lisa like artistic quality. The photographer has signed and dated (1913) the photo in pencil at the bottom right of the image
This is certainly the most impressive Wagner portrait we have ever handled. While we can't say for sure whether it merits a Type I, II or III designation (without removing from the frame and potentially damaging the delicate photo paper), the fact that it was cherished by the Wagner estate as a family heirloom trumps any generational classification under modern authentication standards. Coming with Wagner family provenance in the form of a Wagner Family LOA is far more signiicant than any PSA/DNA paperwork.
