Christy Mathewson was as charismatic and popular as any player in the early 1900’s. In an era when ballplayers were known as hard-livin', hard-drinkin' rogues, there was “Matty”. The college-educated star of the New York Giants was the idol of millions, the role model every parent wanted their children to emulate. His articulate and dignified persona contrasted a fierce competitiveness on the mound that made him arguably the most dominant pitcher of his time.

One of only seven PSA NM-MT 8 examples with just one graded higher, this offered 1911 T205 Gold Border of Mathewson appears to be virtually flawless. The large portrait image of the famously handsome baseball hero is perfectly framed by distinctive gold borders that bear no faults. The Piedmont brand is advertised on the reverse. The notoriously fragile corners show no signs of wear or handling. Matty’s T205 gold-bordered issue is arguably the most sought-after standard issue card bearing his likeness, and certainly among the most difficult to acquire in high grade. The breathtaking print quality of this showpiece, accentuated by the chip-free borders and pinpoint corners, begs for consideration of an even higher technical grade. One would be hard-pressed to find another T205 Mathewson with better eye appeal than this beauty.

It should be noted that this exact same card sold for $36,716 way back in 2011. There hasn't been a better version sell since.
