This lot features an aged and tarnished silver-plated trophy from 1909 that was awarded to the USS West Virginia battleship for fielding the best “base ball” team of the Pacific Fleet and Stations. The 17-inch high, there-handled trophy boasts an intricate design with a base that includes six crisscrossed baseball bats and three baseballs leading up to a larger, more expansive portion that includes three separate sections with engraved text. The first portion of the trophy’s mid-section includes the U.S. Navy insignia at the top with the words “OUR NAVY Base Ball Trophy Given to the Best Base Ball Team of the Pacific Fleet and Stations 1909.” The section section of the trophy shows an engraved replica of the U.S.S. West Virginia floating on the water followed by the text: “WON BY THE U.S.S. WEST VIRGINIA BASE BALL TEAM.” The third engraved portion shows a period ball player at the top followed by with the words “THE WINNING TEAM” called out with the team’s complete roster of 10 players by position and one manager. The impressive trophy, which weighs 8.5 pounds, is engraved at the bottom with the following text: “Made & Plated by Wallace Bro’s Silver Co.”
