This spectacular 8" by 10" cabinet photo of Frank Leland’s Chicago Union Giants features Hall of Famer Andrew “Rube” Foster. His image (standing extreme left) is the earliest known showing Foster with his first professional baseball club. In 1902, Foster only played for this team for a few short months as they barnstormed in the Midwest against black and white teams alike. The photo also shows his battery mate, catcher Chappie Johnson (front 2nd from right). Foster became known as the “Father of the Negro Leagues” when he organized the great black ball clubs during the early Twentieth Century. The back of the cabinet contains a sticker for “George W. Milner City Drug Store, Big Rapids, Michigan." Overall the piece is in near mint shape with a crystal clear image.
Estimate: $6,000-8,000
