Get your hands this scarce Nick Nicholl [sic] "Brown's Champions" 1886 subset example from the N172 Old Judge series. With a grade of PSA GD+ 2.5, this Portrait in Striped Cap is one of just four examples in the PSA Pop Report, with only one rated higher (VG-EX 4). The 1-1/2" by 2-1/2" sepia portrait presents nicely and is a clean example from the condition-sensitive set. Corners are VG and the slightly fading print is probably the only setback. Toned and lightly stained on the reverse, but overall the front portrait image quality holds up to the card's grade.

Hugh N. Nichol was a tiny (5' 4"), speedy outfielder known as "Little Nic" who starred for both the St. Louis Browns and Cincinnati Red Stockings. His 138 stolen bases in 1887 with the Browns of the American Association (before it merged with the National League) remain a professional baseball record. Ricky Henderson's 130 steals in 1982 is considered the "modern" MLB record. His Browns teammate in 1887, Hall of Famer Charles "Commy" Comiskey, swiped 117 bags. My how the game has changed!
