The Following Lot Originates from the Jake Virtue Estate Collection (click here for info.)

This 4-1/8" by 6-1/2" cabinet captures the 1887-1888 Canton ball club of the Ohio State League. The talent on this club was of the highest caliber as six of the 12 men who suited up that season went on to play in the major leagues. This cabinet comes from the collection of Jake Virtue, who at the time was the teams’ first baseman. Virtue, who would later play with Cy Young on the 1890’s Cleveland Spiders teams, batted .333 for Canton in 1887, his third stop on the way to the majors. This crystal-clear team image was produced by Canton’s Courtney Studios, whose advertising is found on both the front and back. The edges show some flaking of the black border and rounding to the edges. The back has some residue at the top from being mounted in an album along with light surface abrasions from storage. A classic team photograph from baseball’s early days originating from the collection of one of the players depicted. LOA from the Jake Virtue Estate.
