The Following Lot Originates from the Jake Virtue Estate Collection (click here for info.)

These two cabinet photographs come from the collection of Jake Virtue who was a member of the 1886 Altoona club. The first piece is a large stately team photo, with the ten players and mascot posing in a studio setting surrounded by their equipment. The photo is mounted on an ornate 9-1/4" by 12-3/4" matte, which records the names of the players as well as “PENN’A STATE LEAGUE ALTOONAS—1886.” The piece shows significant edge wear with the left front corner missing, several tears along the edges and chipping to the surface. There is toning from age and light staining, most noticeably on the back. The second piece in this group is a 4" by 6-1/4" cabinet depicting players William Zecher and Lave Cross. While Zecker never made it to the majors, Cross enjoyed a 21-year career in which he recorded a .292 average. The two players are posed in a studio setting, Zecker with his bat and Cross holding both his catcher’s mask and bat. This cabinet was produced by Goodman of Altoona, whose advertising appears on both the front and back of the piece. The edges show some wear and chipping to the black surface as well as light staining and toning from age. Two very attractive minor league cabinets originating from the collection of former Altoona first baseman Jake Virtue. LOA from the Jake Virtue Estate.
